How Much Does Car Dent Repair Cost in the UK?

If you have found a dent in your car, one of the first questions is usually: how much is it going to cost to repair?

Unfortunately, there is no single price that accurately answers that question. Two dents that look similar in a photograph can require completely different repair methods once they are inspected properly.

A small dent with undamaged paint may be suitable for paintless dent removal. A deeper dent on a body line, a sharp crease or damage that has broken the paint may require traditional body repair, preparation and repainting.

That is why the condition of the panel matters much more than simply measuring the diameter of the dent.

What affects the cost of car dent repair?

Several factors determine how straightforward a dent is to repair.

The size of the dent

Size matters, but it is not the only consideration.

A relatively large, shallow dent can sometimes be easier to repair than a much smaller but very sharp dent. What matters is how far the metal has been stretched and how the impact has changed the shape of the panel.

The depth and shape of the damage

A smooth, shallow depression usually presents a different repair challenge from a sharp crease.

Dents caused by car doors, trolley impacts and low-speed parking accidents can all affect a panel differently.

Sharp impacts may stretch the metal or create defined creases that require more work to restore.

Where the dent is located

A dent in the middle of a relatively flat door panel may be easier to access than damage close to an edge, reinforcement section or body line.

Wheel arches, panel edges and complex body shapes can be more challenging because the original shape of the panel needs to be recreated accurately.

Location can also determine whether technicians can reach the rear of the damaged area.

Whether the paint is damaged

This is one of the biggest factors.

If the original paint remains intact, paintless dent removal may be an option. This technique reshapes the panel without repainting it.

If the paint has cracked, chipped or been scraped away, the repair usually becomes more involved. The damaged area may need preparation, primer, colour-matched paint and clear coat after the shape of the panel has been restored.

What is paintless dent removal?

Paintless Dent Removal, often called PDR, is a technique used to remove certain dents while retaining the vehicle’s original paint finish.

Specialist tools are used to carefully manipulate the damaged metal back towards its original shape.

It can be an excellent option for minor dents where the paint has not been broken and the metal has not been excessively stretched.

Typical examples can include parking dents, door dings and some minor impact damage.

However, not every dent is suitable for PDR.

A proper assessment needs to consider the depth of the dent, accessibility, the location of body lines and the condition of the paint.

When does a dent need painting?

If an impact has damaged the paint as well as the panel, reshaping the metal is only part of the job.

Once the dent has been repaired, the surface may need to be prepared and refinished.

The process can include removing damaged paint and preparing the surface, repairing minor imperfections, applying primer where necessary, matching the vehicle’s colour, applying the colour coat, applying clear coat and finishing and polishing the repaired area.

Modern automotive paintwork can also make colour matching more complex. Metallic, pearl and other specialist finishes can react differently depending on lighting and viewing angle.

This means the cost of repairing a painted dent can depend on the refinishing work just as much as the dent itself.

Does the type of car affect dent repair cost?

It can.

Vehicle construction varies considerably between manufacturers and models. Different panels can be made from different materials and use different reinforcement structures.

Access can also change depending on where equipment, trim or safety systems are positioned.

Modern vehicles may have parking sensors, cameras or driver-assistance components around bumpers and body panels, so damage after an impact sometimes requires more than a purely cosmetic assessment.

Can a badly dented panel always be repaired?

Not always.

Professional body repair aims to retain and restore the existing panel where this is safe and practical, but there are circumstances where replacement may make more sense.

This can happen when a panel is severely stretched, torn, heavily creased or damaged in an area where restoring the original shape would involve disproportionate work.

The decision should be based on the condition of the panel rather than automatically assuming that repair or replacement is the cheaper option.

Why photographs are useful for an initial dent repair quote

Clear photographs can provide a body shop with useful information before you bring the vehicle in.

For the best initial assessment, take one photograph showing the whole damaged panel, one closer photograph of the dent, one photograph from an angle so the change in shape can be seen and photographs showing any paint damage.

Reflections across the panel can actually be useful because they help reveal the shape and depth of a dent.

Photographs cannot always show hidden damage, but they are a good starting point.

Should you repair a small dent?

That depends on what you want from the car, but small dents are often worth dealing with before they become part of a larger bodywork repair.

A dent may affect resale or part-exchange appearance, and if the impact has damaged the paint, exposed metal can also become vulnerable to corrosion.

If the paint remains intact, dealing with the damage early may also leave more repair options available.

Car dent repair in Bristol

If you have a dent and want to know what repair method it actually needs, the easiest first step is an assessment.

At FC&C Body Repair in Bristol, we repair everything from minor scuffs and dents to more substantial accident damage.

Rather than assuming every dent requires the same treatment, we assess the panel, paint condition and location of the damage before recommending a repair.

Send us clear photographs of the damaged area or arrange a visit to our Bristol body shop and we can explain the options available.

Frequently asked questions about car dent repair

Can every car dent be removed without painting?

No. Paintless dent removal is normally suitable only where the paint remains intact and the panel can be reshaped effectively. Cracked or damaged paint will usually require refinishing.

Is a small dent always cheap to repair?

Not necessarily. A small, sharp dent in a difficult location can be more challenging than a larger shallow dent.

Can a dent on a body line be repaired?

Many can, but dents across strong body lines are usually more complex because the original contour of the panel has to be accurately restored.

Can I get a dent repair quote from a photograph?

Photos can often be used for an initial assessment. A final quotation may require the vehicle to be inspected if the damage is complex or there may be damage behind the visible panel.
